Jewelry Cleaning and Care
Swarovski crystals: Made since 1892 by the Austrian family company based in Wattens, Tyrol, Swarovski has been the world's leading manufacturer of cut crystal for over a hundred years. Each bead is machine-faceted, optically pure, 32% lead crystal with facets that have a brilliance and sparkle unmatched by other crystal beads. No one knows for sure what makes Swarovski crystals unique, but whatever they add, it certainly makes these beads more brilliant than any other crystal beads.
Swarovski pearls: We use these when we want a perfectly round pearl. Unlike synthetic glass pearls, Swarovski's crystal pearls have a leaded crystal core that makes them heavier, and Swarovski's pearl coating is similar to a natural pearl lustre and is consistent in color. They also warm to the skin like real pearls do.
Freshwater pearls: Natural freshwater pearls occur in mussels for the same reason that saltwater pearls occur in oysters. Foreign material, usually a sharp object or parasite, enters a mussel and cannot be expelled. To reduce irritation, the mollusk coats the intruder with the same material it uses for shell-building, nacre. Layers of nacre are secreted around the irritant and gradually build up to form the solid pearl. Pearls get their opalescent color from light reflecting in these layers producing an iridescent luster.
Sea Glass (or beach glass) is glass found on beaches and has been tumbled and smoothed by the water and sand, creating small pieces of frosted glass. Sea glass originates from bottles and jars that enter the water as litter and become broken up by the waves and rocks. Conservation and environmental activities, as well as fewer products produced in glass jars, is making sea glass more and more rare. We offer these sandals with both light blue and clear frosted sea glass. No two pieces are alike! We insist on genuine, natural sea glass.
Mother of Pearl: The pearly internal layer of certain mollusk shells that is processed to make beads. This is also called nacre and is the same material pearls are made from. We insist on grade A Mother of Pearl components!
Rock Crystal / Crystal Quartz: We really like this gemstone because it's so versitle, sparkly and it's a great alternative to Swarovski crystals. We insist on grade A, as always.
Lava: The first thing you may notice about these beads is how lightweight they are. They're very porous, and look like black sponge - but they're handmade of genuine Volcanic andesite-basalt Lava stone. Lava rock is an igneous volcanic rock produced in intense heat conditions. A stone of strength and fertility. It provides stability in times of change, and helps to dissipate anger and provide guidance and understanding as it assists one in "bouncing back".
Fossil Coral: Fossil coral is ancient coral that gradually turned into the gemstone agate. The fossilized coral appears as small "flowers" on the stone. Most specimens are found in Georgia and Florida. Sailors used to wear talismans of fossilized coral to ward off bad weather. Fossil coral is a live witness of the process of Evolution. Gold Fill: Gold-filled is a material on which a layer of gold has been fused. The resulting ingot is rolled or drawn to make sheet and wire. The base is clad with 10% 12K gold. This is superior to gold plated and gold vermeil jewelry, since the layer of gold is thicker and will wear better. We choose not to use Gold Plate in any of our items as the plate wears off. Gold Fill is a more cost-efficient way of using long-lasting gold in jewelry. The gold coloring of Gold Fill does not wear off like Gold Plate.
Gold Vermeil: Pronounced "vermay," vermeil is a French word describing sterling silver that has been electroplated with at least 100 millionths of an inch of karat gold. Our gold vermeil is 10kt, 14kt or 22kt gold over sterling silver. We prefer Gold Fill, however in order to offer more of our designs in gold as well as sterling silver, occassionally we must use gold vermeil components as some components are just not made in gold fill. The alternative is solid gold, which can be custom ordered for a fee. We clearly identify when we use gold vermeil.
Sterling Silver: Pure Silver, like pure gold is much too soft to to create jewelry. Sterling Silver, otherwise known as 925 silver (sometimes stamped with 925) is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. We also use argentium silver, which is more tarnish resistent. The other materials included in Sterling Silver are used to provide strength. Sterling Silver is recommended for people that may have reactions with some types of jewelry as there is no nickel in Sterling Silver. Sterling Silver, like Gold Fill, will not 'wear off'. It will tarnish over time, but to stop the tarnish process, keep your Sterling Silver Jewelry in a zip lock bag, or something similar.
Soft Flex: Soft Flex® Wire is constructed of either 21 or 49 micro spun, marine quality, stainless steel wires woven together and then nylon coated. It is hypoallergenic and can be worn in and out of salt or fresh water. It has been designed to withstand the abrasion of glass, mineral or metal beads. We generally choose to use the strongest diameter of Soft Flex wire, meant for the stringing of semi precious beads, which can sometimes be abrasive. This ensures the maximum strength of all necklaces and bracelets made with Soft Flex. We like Soft Flex so much because it doesn't kink like other wires and it's super strong.
Stretch Magic: Stretch Magic is a super strong clear elastic bead and jewelry cord. It's a high tech polymer that will not crack or harden over time. We use this in our stretch sandals.
For our Crystal Sandals, we use only the best - Carisis flip flops and Swarovski crystal xillion rose rhinestones. Carisis flip flops are a super comfortable rubber flip flop. They are butter-soft, bouncy, flexible and durable. I promise once you try them you'll be unable to return to other sandals! To top them off, we use Swarovski crystal xillion rose rhinestones. These rhinestones are the absolute best for sparkle and color - they have 14 facets instead of the competition's 8 and Swarovski rhinestones contain a minimum of 32% lead, making it optically very pure.
We insist on Carisis and Swarovski rhinestones for your special day!
Hair Pins: We use 2" hair pins and they're available in both a silver or gold/brass color.
Hair Combs: Our mini combs have 6 prongs and are 1" wide and 1.5" long. They're availabe in both silver and gold plated.

Good to know! The toe area of our Barefoot Sandals (and sometimes throughout the sandals) are all made with tiny pieces of glass called seed beads. We refer to these colored beads, available in gold, silver and white, as "accents". The metals (sterling silver or gold-fill) used in our non-stretch barefoot sandals and all of our other jewelry are referred to as "components".
All barefoot sandals are sold in pairs, one for each foot. We have both stretchy and non-stretchy sandals. We try to keep our sandals stretchy as much as possible because they offer a more tailored fit. However, some materials require the use of stronger cord, so we use a non-stretch cord called Soft Flex. "Single" and "Double" Wrap reefers to the amount of times a sandal wraps around your ankle. Our Caribbean Sea sandals are single wrap, and our Cayman Isle sandals are double wrap, for example.
Barefoot sandals are available in both adult and child sizes. Adult size starts at shoe size 4. All others below adult size 4 are considered child size. After choosing adult or child to add the item to your cart, please indicate exact size needed at checkout. If you have large ankles, you should make us aware of that as well at checkout. If you are purchasing barefoot sandals for a child, please be clear with sizing (a toddler 4 and youth 4 are very different indeed!)
All anklets are sold individually. Adult anklets are 9.5" long. Our flower girl anklets are 6.5". Custom sizing is available - just let us know at checkout how larger or small to make your new jewelry. All anklets are strung on soft flex for strength and durability, except our floating anklets which are strung on clear mono-filament.
All toe rings are sold individually and are made with stretchy bead cord for a snug, but comfortable fit.
All of our earrings are sold in pairs. They are all made with the best .925 sterling silver or 14K gold filled components, including the earwires, ear posts or ear threads, as applicable. Clip on earrings are available for an additional fee.
We have three types of necklaces. Our illusion necklaces are strung on clear nylon monfilament bead cord for that coveted floating look. Our beaded necklaces are strung on soft flex for strength. Our chain necklaces are made on sterling silver or gold-fill cable chain. Individual components may vary, please check the item description for more information. Necklaces range from choker length at 14" to regular 15 ", and nearly all are adjustable with a 2" extender chain. If you require a different length, just let us know at checkout.
All bracelets are sold individually. Our stretchy bracelets are made with strong, stretchy jewelry cord and are one-size-fits-most. All other bracelets are strung on soft flex for strength and durability and use sterling silver or gold fill components. Please check the item description for specifics of construction as well as a materials list. Most bracelets are 7" - custom sizing is available.

We want you to enjoy your jewelry for a long, long time! To help ensure that its beauty lasts, we've compiled a list of care how-to's to help you keep it in good condition.
Sterling Silver: Tarnishing is a natural process caused by oxidation. Tarnish does not damage the silver and can easily be removed by rubbing the piece gently with a soft, treated polishing cloth. Do not use tarnish-removing dips on pieces that have decorative oxidation. When you are not wearing your silver pieces, store them in a cool, dry place. Zip-lock bags are ideal for this and will help prevent both tarnishing and scratching by other pieces. Soap and water will also help keep your silver looking good. Do not dry silver off with paper towels or tissues - always use a soft cloth.
Gold filled: Gold filled jewelry is cared for in the same manner as other precious jewelry. The absolutely best thing you can do for your Gold Filled jewelry is to clean regularly using a little bit of warm water, and a soft cloth to dry and shine after. Many chemicals marketed for cleaning jewelry are actually somewhat abrasive or corrosive and can cause some damage or color alteration to your jewelry. The best way to avoid this is to keep it simple. Warm water and a soft cloth are the best thing you can do to maintain the beauty of your jewelry.
Swarovski crystals and Swarovski pearls: Avoid polishing the Swarovski crystals on your jewelry. Rather, use a mild soap and water solution and pat dry. This will aid in removing dirt and oil and restore the shine.
Freshwater Pearls: Proper care can preserve and extend the life of pearls. Extreme dryness is damaging; pearls are also sensitive to acids, perspiration, cosmetics, and hair spray. Do not store pearls in sealed bags, they need to breath. But do wipe them clean after wearing as they could retain body oils and eventually stain or change color. Since they are relatively soft, they can be easily scratched. Do not use a Silver Polishing Cloth with Pearl Jewelry as it it will strip the pearls of their luster. Keep your pearl jewelry separate from other jewelry pieces, so other pieces don't scratch the pearls.
